Mit Fort Freak kommt bald (am 21. Juni 2011) Band 21 der Wild-Cards-Serie (im Hardcover). GRRM hat schon vor einiger Zeit in seinem Blog geschrieben:

Miller's novel DEATH DRAWS FIVE, was released in hardcover just a week before its publisher (iBooks) went bankrupt, and very few copies ever made it to market. But at long last Brick Tower Press, who acquired many of the assets of iBooks in the bankruptcy proceedings, has released a paperback edition. It's available on Amazon and may also be turning up at some local bookstores.

Syfy Films announced today that it has acquired the rights to the sci-fi superhero anthology called "Wild Cards" edited by George R.R. Martin. The ongoing anthology of 22 books was first published in 1987 and is based on stories by a consortium of sci-fi writers. Melinda Snodgrass will pen the script for Wild Cards which is the first acquisition for Syfy Films since its launch in December 2010. The announcement was made today by Syfy Film's Senior Vice President of Production, Gregory Noveck.

"'Wild Cards' presents a terrific franchise opportunity given the volume of material from this compelling fantasy series," said Noveck. "We're thrilled to have the opportunity to develop a film based on the anthology's supernatural heroes, and to be working with such talented and visionary writers as George R.R. Martin and Melissa Snodgrass."

"Wild Cards" is one of the most successful and longest running, sci-fi book series. Its characters were developed with the goal of creating a realistic take on people with super powers and how they affect their daily lives. The series was conceived as a shared universe in which different authors contributed new characters and storylines to the overall mythos.

Martin and Snodgrass will serve as executive producers. Along with Martin and Snodgrass, original contributors include contemporary sci-fi writers Roger Zelazny ("The Chronicles of Amber") and Walter Jon Williams ("Hardwired"). More recently a new generation of noted sci-fi and fantasy authors have contributed characters and storylines to this ever-growing universe. They include Cherie Priest ("Boneshaker"), Paul Cornell ("Doctor Who"), David Anthony Durham ("Acacia") and Carrie Vaughn ("The Kitty Norville" series). The books have been translated into several languages and have been adapted into comic books and role-playing games.

Great news for Wild Cards fans! We have just closed a deal with SyFy Films, a brand new joint venture of Universal Pictures and the SyFy Channel, for film and television rights to the Wild Cards series of mosaic novels and shared world anthologies.

Melinda Snodgrass will write the screenplay. Part of the series since the very start, Melinda has been my assistant editor on most volumes of Wild Cards, and is the creator of many of the series most popular and iconic characters, including Dr. Tachyon and Double Helix. Snod will also serve as an executive producer on the film, as will I.
Further details will need to wait until we're a little further along in development, but I think I speak for all the writers in the Wild Cards Consortium, both new and old, when I say that we're jazzed. We look forward to working with Gregory Noveck and his great team at SyFy Films, and to bringing some of your favorite Wild Cards characters to the screen.

Auch in Sachen Neuauflage der alten Bücher hat Martin eine Ankündigung auf Lager: Band 2, Aces High, erscheint bei Tor zu Weihnachten. No new stories this time around, schreibt Martin, was natürlich schade ist. Zum Trost:

WILD CARDS. Close to a deal for a new original and four more reprints. Meanwhile, Melinda Snodgrass and I are working on volume twenty-two, LOWBALL, a sequel to FORT FREAK. And speaking of FORT FREAK, that one is out in paperback. Melinda is also scripting the Wild Cards movie for SyFy films. And a new Wild Cards comic miniseries is in the works.

Hier ist noch ein Eintrag. http://grrm.livejour...com/286255.html Ich muss zugeben, ich habe dies Serie damals (in den 80ern) verächtlich links liegen gelassen, weil ich irgendwie auch nie so recht ein "Superhelden"-Fan war, und ein paar Marvel-Samples mich nicht so recht überzeugen konnten. So langsam werde ich aber mit dem Thema warm. Vor allem dank "Watchmen". Nachdem ich jetzt Martin als "Qualitätssiegel" akzeptiert habe, konnte ich mich durchringen in Wild Cards einzusteigen. Bisher ohne es bereut zu haben. Es ist also offenbar möglich 25 Jahre Ignoranz über Bord zu werfen ...

Klingt gut. Ich fand die »Wild Cards« großartig, habe sie aber nur in der deutschen Übersetzung gelesen. Das wäre ja glatt ein Grund, sich auf die englischen Originale zu stürzen.

Hi,

ich habe das aktuelle Buch "Wildcards - Das Spiel der Spiele" angefanen
und nach einigem suchen herausgefunden, dass es dabei um die Übersetzung von
Inside Straight (2008) ist.

Weiß jemand ob das Buch sich von der Storry stark an die ersten Bände anknüft
(die ich nicht gelesen habe) und es erstmal sinnvoll ist die vorhergehenden
Bände zu lesen?

Soweit ich gehört habe, soll dieser Band auch für Neulinge geeignet sein, denn die Publikation der Wild-Cards-Reihe wechselte mit diesem Band den englischen Verlag (wo mittlerweile auch noch drei weitere Bände erschienen sind), sodass man wohl Wert darauf legte, den Einstieg zu erleichtern. Andernfalls hättest du es auch schwer, da es der achtzehnte Band der Reihe ist.

Was auch dafür spricht, ist, dass laut Wikipedia zuletzt vor 15 Jahren ein Wild-Cards-Buch übersetzt wurde. Also darf man annehmen, dass man auch bei Penhaligon darauf geachtet hat, dass die Handlung ohne Vorkenntnisse verständlich ist.

Disclaimer: Da ich "Spiel der Spiele" noch nicht gelesen habe (aber selbst schon sehr gespannt bin, was mich bei Wild Cards erwartet), sind alle Angaben ohne Gewehr, Phaser oder Strahlenkanone

Ich hatte die sechs auf Deutsch übersetzten Bücher gelesen, danach nur zwei oder drei weitere im Original (definitiv Band 7 und 8). Ab Inside Straight (immerhin Band 18) habe ich die neuen Bücher dann im Original gelesen und hatte trotz der großen Lücke kaum Schwierigkeiten, mich wieder ins Wild-Cards-Universum einzufinden.

Viel wichtiger ist aber erst einmal der Hinweis, dass demnächst mit Buch 23 High Stakes (für 30. August im Hardcover angekündigt) die Jokertown-Trilogie abgeschlossen wird. Und dann kommen hoffentlich zügig die Bücher 24 bis 26.

Ich habe das Buch mittlerweile gelesen und hatte wieder - wie bei jedem Wild-Cards-Band - eine Menge Spaß damit. Beteiligt waren dieses Mal übrigens David Anthony Durham, Stephen Leigh, John Jos. Miller, Melinda M. Snodgrass, Caroline Spector und Ian Tregillis, Herausgeber ist wie immer George R.R. Martin, dieses Mal offiziell assistiert von Melinda M. Snodgrass, deren Name es auch aufs Cover geschafft hat (wie schon erstmals beim Vorgängerband "Lowball"). Hauptfiguren der irren Geschichte, die einen pulpigen Lovecraft-Touch hat (und das in Verbindung mit Superhelden, logisch), sind Marcus "Infamous Black Tongue" Morgan, Barbara "Babel" Baden, Bathsheeba "The Midnight Angel" Fox, Francis Xavier "Franny" Black, Michelle "Amazing Bubbles" Pond und Mollie "Tesseract" Steunenberg, die alle schon aus den vorangegangenen Bänden bekannt sein sollten. Es handelt sich übrigens wieder mal um einen Mosaikroman, das bedeutet jeder Autor kümmert sich um "seine" Figur, schreibt aber keine abgeschlossene Geschichte (die mir eigentlich lieber sind), sondern die einzelnen Handlungsstränge werden mehr oder weniger kunstvoll ineinander verflochten. Das macht's manchmal, gerade bei wirklich kurzen Abschnitten, schon schwer, dem Geschehen zu folgen, deshalb empfiehlt sich (was ich leider nicht geschafft habe) zügiges am-Stück-Lesen, um den Überblick zu behalten. Das werde ich sicher tun, wenn ich eines Tages mal die ganze Wild-Cards-Saga hintereinander weglese ...
