The third edition of the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction is to be released online and not as a book, under an arrangement with Orion imprint Victor Gollancz and ESF Ltd, a new company set up by the contributors to the first two editions of the book. The content will be available on www.sf-encyclopedia.com and be free to all users, with Gollancz acquiring electronic rights to the book through United Agents' Robert Kirby.

An initial "beta" version of the site will go live in conjunction with Gollancz' celebrations of its 50th anniversary as a science fiction publisher. The initial version of the third edition will contain around 3 million words, up from the second edition in 1993, which contained 1.3 million, and will feature about 12,000 entries and more than 100,000 internal links. The entries cover all areas of science fiction, including authors, illustrators, movies, music, games and fanzines. The text will be completed, through monthly updates, by the end of 2012.

The directors of new company ESF are John Clute and David Langford, leading editors of the edition, as well as Peter Nicholls who edited the first edition and is editor emeritus of the third edition. Graham Sleight is managing editor of the edition, and also a director of the company. Sleight said the company had been set up with the "financial backing of friends of the project and of science-fiction".

Orion deputy c.e.o. and group publisher Malcolm Edwards said: "We're delighted to have been able to facilitate the online publication of this monumental and definitive work--more than ever the single, reliable reference source which anyone interested in SF needs. As a contributing editor to that long-ago first edition, it's a particular pleasure to me to have been able to play a part in making this happen."

This is the first time Gollancz has been involved with the ESF. In terms of the electronic rights deal, Edwards said: "It is a slightly fine distinction, we have licensed it and underwritten the web development." On why Gollancz had decided to enter into the project, and to make the content available for free and only online, Edwards added: "There are other announcements we are planning to make that clearer next week. It's not entirely altruistic." He added: "We explored various paywall options and we realised none of them were really practical with the way that the web is moving . . . The ESF is very much not a wiki model, the content is controlled by the editors." He said that the sheer volume of content made the prospect of a print edition challenging, but said: "if there proves to be the demand then we will look at it."

Sleight said "never say never" when asked if the title would ever be available as a physical edition or e-book, but said: "We are hoping to be more directly in touch with the whole communtity [through the content being available online]."

When asked if ESF could take on other similar projects, he didn't rule out the possibility, and mentioned Clute had co-edited an encyclopedia of fantasy, but said: "At the moment, with 3 million words, we've all got enough on our plates."

Ich freue mich schon auf die neue Ausgabe und hoffe, dass die mir auch einige Bewertungen/Einschätzungen der seit 1993 erschienenen Texte (das interessiert mich am meisten) liefern wird. Beim Lesen des oben eingestellten Textes fiel mir auf, dass evtl. gewisse inhaltliche Unterschiede existieren zwischen ihm und der auf sf-enclopedia.com eingestellten Ankündigung. Das klang für mich erst mal so, also gäbe es 'nur' 75% der endgültigen 3. Edition gratis. Ich kann da aber natürlich auch was missverstanden haben. Gruß, Rainer

Wenn ich da nicht was komplett missverstehe, wird die ESF umsonst sein. Am Anfang, zum 50. Geburtstag von Gollancz, wird aber bloss 75%-Betaversion aufgeschaltet (weil noch nicht alles fertig ist). Ich sehe da keinen Hinweis darauf, dass das Angebot später etwas kosten soll.

Das scheint Teil einer "Offensive" zu sein. Jetzt wird die Encyclopedia bereits mit einem größeren eBook-Projekt vermarktet.

Nachdem ich zunächst dachte, die "uralten" Titel würden kostenlos verfügbar gemacht, gehe ich mittlerweile davon aus, dass es hier um Autoren geht, die seit Jahrzehnten schreiben und deren komplette Backlist man als eBook wiederveröffentlichen will. Da bietet sich die Encylopedia natürlich als Appetitmacher an.

Mal schauen, wie die Preisgestaltung und Aufmachung der Klassiker aussehen wird. Noch habe ich keinen eBook-Reader.

Gollancz ist dieses Jahr ja sehr rührig. Soeben habe ich folgendes Mail erhalten:

Our ambition for the SF Gateway is to produce the most comprehensive electronic library of classic SF & Fantasy titles ever assembled, and to provide a place for readers to talk about them. Working closely, but independently, with the Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, we hope we can build a destination site for people interested in reading, discussing and learning about science fiction. People like us.

Gollancz has worked hard over the years to republish, and keep available, the key titles that form the touchstones of the genre. The SF and Fantasy Masterworks series are obvious examples - but even a house as steeped as Gollancz in the heritage of SF can only achieve so much. The modern publishing landscape can be very unforgiving of modest sales, and the harsh reality is that vast troves of classic SF & Fantasy are almost certainly destined never again to see print. A great shame, but what to do about it?

The answer arrives - in pleasingly science fictional fashion - in the form of new technology: digital publishing. The technology now exists to enable us to make available, for the first time, the entire backlists of an incredibly wide range of classic and modern SF and fantasy authors. Our ambition is to ensure that the forgotten classics of SF and Fantasy are never forgotten again. It will take time, but we're committed to the project. We will continue to develop the website and to make more and more classic SF and Fantasy books available, many for the first time in decades, and we intend to have fun doing it. Grundsätzlich sicher ein lobenswertes Ansinnen, derzeit scheint aber alles noch sehr im Anfangsstadium. Kein einziger Titel von Wells oder Asimov ist aufgeführt und die Suchergebnisse sind generell ein bisschen seltsam.

EDIT: Ich sehe gerade, dass Lucardus das bereits hier gepostet hat.

Ich habe gerade einige Zeit mit der Beta-Version der SF Encyclopedia verbracht, die seit gestern online ist. Offensichtlich ist die noch im Aufbau. Das sieht man z. B. daran, dass noch keine Artikel zu Autoren wie Adam Roberts, Justina Robson und Tricia Sullivan eingestellt sind. Allerdings schon zu literarischen Genies wie David Drake und Eric Flint. (Na, ich gebe zu, die sind schon länger im Geschäft.) Immerhin (kleine Genugtuung) ist bislang ein Eintrag zu John Ringo nicht einmal geplant. Das entschädigt für vieles.

Ich habe gerade einige Zeit mit der Beta-Version der SF Encyclopedia verbracht, die seit gestern online ist. Offensichtlich ist die noch im Aufbau. Das sieht man z. B. daran, dass noch keine Artikel zu Autoren wie Adam Roberts, Justina Robson und Tricia Sullivan eingestellt sind. Allerdings schon zu literarischen Genies wie David Drake und Eric Flint.

Andreas Eschbach ist "drin", wird aber nicht im "Germany"-Artikel erwähnt, der offenbar auf dem Stand von 1990 stehengeblieben ist. Immerhin hat die Internova einen eigenen, kleinen Eintrag. Trotzdem hat man schon einiges zu lesen.

Irgendwie gefällt mir die Darstellungsweise nicht; das Schriftbild ist zu nervös und unruhig, die Jahreszahlen zu fett, die Links zu blau. Für so eine Enzyklopädie würde ich ein ruhigeres Layout bevorzugen.

Zum aktuellen Stand der Encyclopedia respektive zur Frage, was noch fehlt und kommen wird, ist dieser Blogeintrag aufschlussreich.

In all probability, yes. We know there are a lot of missing entries at the moment. These gaps will be filled over the course of the next year or so.
