In 2004 verteile ich eine Geschichte von mir in meinem Freundeskreis. Die Story ist SF und ich möchte sie euch deshalb nicht vorenthalten. Sie ist (wieder mal) auf Englisch, so langsam meine SF-Schreibsprache. Es sollte jetzt fehlerfrei sein, hat man mir jedenfalls gesagt. Wer kein Englisch kann oder lesen mag, muss halt dieses Posting auslassen: Sorry. PS: Ich hatte sehr viel Mühe mit dem Bild. Das Format und manchmal erscheint es einfach nicht ... Ich habe die Geschichte in drei Teilen zerstückelt, so lässt es sich wohl am besten lesen.

Leave Us Alone
The salvaged alien space probe was very primitive. This, of course, was all right: all space traveling live forms had to start somewhere. The probe was equipped for velocity with six hydrazine thrusters, which had been out of commission for ages now. And four radioisotope thermoelectric generators had once provided the ship's electrical power. Easy tasks such as detecting, telescoping, measuring and photographing were done by only eleven scientific instruments, which were also all out of order now. This unmanned ship was really typical for a young space traveling race, but no one knew yet which race. One thing was untypical though: on the outer hull, there was a plaque attached. This plaque was engraved. The plaque (not the ship) was sent to professor Hcireuz†™s laboratory whose job was to figure out what the engravings meant.
†˜Where was the ship found, professor?†™ asked Nrooh, the young assistant.
†˜When it was spotted, it wasn't in the gravitational field of a star. But it was closest to the red dwarf Sorsb IV. A freighter found it on the way to our neighboring system Neldabaar,†™ answered Hcireuz.
†˜Hard to believe that they discovered it at all.†™
†˜Yes, as small as the probe is, it was a real coincidence. It might have gone on forever. If the freighter hadn†™t been on a near collision path with the space probe, the vehicle would never even have been sighted.†™
†˜And we don†™t know anything about its origins yet?†™
†˜Well, Nrooh, that†™s our job to find out by deciphering the plaque. When I received the plaque this morning, they also handed me the research done earlier. The plaque is made of gold-anodized aluminum, so it was created for endurance. It was attached to a good protective spot, behind an antenna strut. And there is no way to play this plaque. All there is are these engravings.†™
The professor and his assistant now had a closer look at the plaque, which looked like this:

Let†™s start with the diagram in the upper left corner. It looks like a simplified diagram of a hydrogen atom, which contains only one proton and one electron. It makes sense. It is recognizable everywhere, to all creatures familiar with nuclear science. Hydrogen is not only the simplest, lightest and smallest chemical element; it is also the most common substance in the entire universe.†™
†˜But why engrave that? To show that they are clever enough to understand physics? To prove a point?†™ asked Nrooh.
†˜Hardly. That is already understandable from the fact that they made a space probe at all. Maybe this simple diagram represents a language key such as a letter or a number. Easy to understand for finders like us. And which well-known factor do you know which is actually based on this atom, Nrooh?†™
†˜Of course! The IGN, the intergalactic number one! While the hydrogen atom flips from its parallel to its antiparallel state, it emits a radio-wave photon with a frequency of 1.42 MHz. Its wavelength was named the intergalactic number or IGN. It was introduced once as a standard time and length factor understandable to all races in the galaxy.†™
†˜Very good, assistant Nrooh! Let†™s have a look at the next diagram, right under the IGN.†™
†˜Well, it†™s definitely a map, Professor Hcireuz. Looks like a stellar map. Pulsars is my bet: the arched lines could be the pulse. The map†™s center is probably the star system of the creatures. The end of the one non-arched line thus means a fixed point in space, like the center of the galaxy. We should compare noticeable pulsars with their pulse now and in the past. A calculation of the ship†™s original location and the epoch of launch must be doable.†™
†˜Let†™s go through the other symbols before calculating. There is another map with circles under it, here in the lower left corner. I suppose it†™s their solar system, existing of one sun with nine planets.†™
Nrooh was baffled for a moment, but then he laughed. †˜One sun? You would actually consider the possibility of intelligent life in a one-star system? Intelligent evolution requires at least a double star to feel influences and thus to start comparing stars.†™
†˜Is that so? Well, you never know. The evolution theory of intelligence is randomly accepted but was never proved. Sure, intelligent beings born under one sun would think in very different ways than us, but I don†™t want to overrule the possibility. After all, do you see a second sun in the diagram?†™
Nrooh looked skeptical but he returned to the map. †˜The lines above and under the planets surely don†™t mean pulsing here. It might have to do with moons †¦ or no, more likely with the relative distance between the planets. The planets could never be at regular distances from each other in an exact scale. There is also a simplified illustration of the space probe with an arrow. It must mean that the ship started from the third planet and left their system somewhere between the paths of the fifth and sixth planet. Mmmh, the silhouette of the space ship also appears behind the two creatures.†™
†˜Yes, the ship appears on the plaque twice. The ship's measurements must stand in relation to the bodies. It†™s to determine their height. They are small! The diameter of the dish antenna itself is about half our size, after all,†™ Hcireuz said.
†˜There are some lines more to the right,†™ Nrooh noted. †˜I wonder if those are connected with this size comparison.†™
†˜Well, the upper and the lower line match the opposite sides of the shorter creature exactly. In contrary to the drawing, its hind paws must be the same size in reality. It is taking a step backward and to the side at the same moment! And so is the other creature, slightly. The two-dimensional drawing now gets a three-dimensional character. Those beings are real artists.†™
†˜And the lines between it?†™ Nrooh asked.
†˜The lines in the middle †¦ oh, it†™s a binary number. The number eight. Those aliens have a binary system in use.†™

†˜Could the distance between the opposite lines be eight times IGN?† Hcireuz thought aloud. †˜Could you calculate that for us, computer?†™

†˜With all this information - binary numbers, length and time of the IGN, the two maps - could you calculate the origin of the space probe?†™
†˜With 99,53 % surety the ship started in the solar system Los, approximately 51†™481 years ago,†™ the computer said.
†˜Los? Have we ever been in that system?†™ asked Nrooh.
†˜Seven flights through the system are registered. Only for traveling through and for mapping the area. There were no landings on any of the planets†™, the computer answered.
†˜No wonder, we seldom visited there. Who would ever be interested in a one-star system? But that might change, now that we know of this race.†™
†˜Your mind is developing fast, Nrooh. One day, you†™ll become an excellent professor yourself. But I don†™t know yet if we†™ll be visiting this system more often from now on. Let†™s finally have a look at the drawings of the creatures themselves. They are bipeds. They have heads with two eyes, a mouth, a sense organ and some fur. Do you see something †¦ extraordinary about one of them, Nrooh?†™
†˜It†™s hard to oversee! One is sexually neutral. Have you ever seen a race like that before?†™

The larger creature on the plaque was a male: he had a penis. This male was holding one front paw up making a threatening gesture. The other one was astonishing. It was hard to believe. It had no sex.
†˜If they don†™t have females, how do they reproduce?†™ wondered Nrooh.
†˜It can†™t be; and there lies our answer: since it†™s against any logic, I believe this illustration itself is wrong!†™
†˜Why would they portray themselves wrong?†™ Nrooh asked confused.
Hcireuz didn†™t give a straight answer. †˜My opinion is that this is an aggressive, male dominated, sexually frustrated race.†™
†˜How do you come to that conclusion?†™
†˜There must be a male and a female. So I believe the smaller one is a female after all, but they just didn†™t dare to draw the vaginal opening! How unusual this might sound: they are sexually frustrated.
The male is the dominating sex because the woman is reduced and he is doing the action.
And then they are aggressive because of the obvious threatening gesture.
This raised claw is the most important sign of the plaque. It†™s the direct message. The aliens are saying: “Back off! This solar system is ours. Not yours. We say who and where we are, but don't come near us, or we will take revenge.† I hope never to see one of these self-assured brutes in reality.†™
Nrooh suddenly shivered even though it wasn†™t cold. †˜Where do you think they are today? Will they leave their system and come to us one day?†™
†˜I don†™t think so. The probe is an early experimental device. These aliens probably didn†™t send much more, wanted to stay by themselves, had no interest in manned spaceships. They are probably still sticking to their planet; preferring to stay in their own system.†™
†˜So what shall we do?†™
†˜What they want. Leave them alone. The diagram of the hydrogen transition stage also proves that they knew how to make bombs. In the 50†™000 years since, this aggressive race will have invented some dangerous weapons. I†™ll advise the council to make contacting and traveling through this system forbidden.†™

Hallo Rock!
Finde ich beeindruckend, dass Du es Dir zutraust, auf Englisch zu schreiben. Ich beherrsche das Englische ganz passabel (war mal ein Jahr in den USA), würde das aber nicht versuchen. Dazu sind mir die sprachlichen Nuancen zu wichtig, für die ein Jahr Aufenthalt bei mir noch lange nicht ausgereicht hat. Mir ist jedenfalls beim Lesen nicht aufgefallen, dass Du ein Nicht-Muttersprachler bist! Bist Du Zweisprachler?
Zum Inhalt Deiner Geschichte: Originell, auch wenn ich bereits nach den ersten Zeilen "gerochen" habe, dass hier Ausserirdische ein irdisches Produkt untersuchen und nicht umgekehrt -- warum, kann ich nicht sagen, vielleicht bin ich diesen Blockwinkel zu gewohnt von Lems Kyberiaden 
.
Die Missverständnisse in ihren Interpretationsversuchen sind amüsant zu lesen. Ich finde allerdings, dass man da noch mehr herausholen könnte. Insbesondere verstehe ich nicht ganz, warum die beiden sofort wissen, wo sich bei dem Weibchen der Geburtskanal befinden muss -- und daraus auch noch direkt auf die von Dir intendierte sexuelle Verklemmung schließen. Da würde ich noch ein paar logische Zwischenschritte einbauen.
Übrigens: Schau Dir mal eine unbekleidete Frau in dieser Position an, falls gerade zur Hand -- vom Geburtskanal ist da nämlich tatsächlich nicht so viel zu sehen

Hallo RMS, ich verstehe zwar nicht, warum sich diese Story nicht auch in deutscher Sprache schreiben lassen sollte, aber trotzdem: gefällt mir! Aus der "Analyse" hättest Du vielleicht ein bißchen mehr herausholen können, da bietet sich ja eininges an; und ein paar der Ableitungen sind aus der Story heraus nicht direkt ableitbar - aber das hat tichy bereits angemerkt, und insgesamt tut's dem Spaß keinen Abbruch. Ad Astra, Marc-IvoWer kein Englisch kann oder lesen mag, muss halt dieses Posting auslassen

Sorry, ich hatte nie geantwortet auf eure netten Kommentare, Tichy und Misc. Das hole ich jetzt nach.
Als ich diese berühmte Zeichnung vor vielen Jahren zum ersten Mal sah, fielen mir zwei Sachen ein:
1) Diese gehobene Hand könnte von Ausserirdischen als Drohung empfunden werden
2) Vielleicht ist eine Figur als Mann erkennbar, doch wie sollten Ausserirdischen die andere Figur als Frau erkennen, wo man ja gar keine Spalte sieht. Nach dem Motto: Hätte man dies nicht etwas deutlicher zeichnen können?
Die Jahre vergingen ... und heutzutage kenne ich die Entstehungsgeschichten dieser Platte.
Eine Anekdote ist, dass diese Zeichnung in den (amerikanischen) Zeitungen als Skandal aufgefasst wurde: Wie konnte man bloss diesen Schmutz in den Weltraum schicken?
Ich jedenfalls blieb bei meinen ursprünglichen Gedanken und dachte mir eine Geschichte (die obenstehende) aus, in welcher ich mich wunderte, wie die ausserirdischen Finder auf die Platte reagieren würden.
So. Das Geburtskanal-Problem ist nun, dass ich zwar die Zeichnung als verwirrend für Aliens ansehe, meine Leser aber die Zeichnung anders interpretieren können. Hier liegt eine stilistische Schwäche vor, ich muss deutlicher machen, dass meine Aliens jene Verständnisprobleme haben, wie ich sie für angemessen halte. Wenn ich die Geschichte später mal umschreibe, muss ich da den Hebel ansetzen.
Nochmals vielen Dank für euere Bemerkungen!
Ach ja, meine Englisch-Fase. Ein guter Moment für einen persönlichen Rückblick. Klar kann man diese Geschichte auch auf deutsch schreiben. Doch englisch ist nicht nur die eigentliche Weltsprache (vor 1000 Jahren hätte ich wohl lateinisch, vor 2000 Jahren alt-griechisch geschrieben), sondern auch die Sprache des SF. In England und Amerika gibt es viele Magazine, die SF-Geschichten publizieren. Diese Tatsache erhöht meine Chancen eine SF Short Story zu veröffentlichen (nicht das es mir etwas gebracht hat, ich habe die Geschichte mehrmals angeboten und stets zurückerhalten). In Deutschland kann man die Publikationsmöglichkeiten an einer Hand abzählen. Als ich mit dieser Geschichte anfing, kam hinzu, dass Alien Contact gerade ihr Druckheft aufgegeben hatte, ich Phantastisch! nicht kannte und andere Möglichkeiten (wie Nova) existierten damals noch nicht. Diesen Nachteil einer zeitlichen Nicht-Existenz eines Marktes wollte ich zu einem Vorteil umkehren. Die Gelegenheit eine englische Geschichte zu schreiben! Aber keine Bange, ich sehe es inzwischen ein, dies ist ein deutschsprachiges Forum. Das nächste Mal, wenn ich hier eine Idee vorstellen möchte, dann werde ich es auf deutsch tun (dann kommt wohl auch mehr Respons). Ach ja, noch was, nur in niederländisch kann ich fehlerfrei schreiben. Ich will mich nicht selbst loben, aber ich kann so gut deutsch und englisch, dass ich diese Sprachen als Schreibsprachen nutzen möchte, auch wenn ich Tage für einen kleinen, sprachlich richtigen Text brauche (hier im Forum schreibe ich einfach drauflos ohne mich viel um Rechtschreibung oder Grammatik zu kümmern).ich verstehe zwar nicht, warum sich diese Story nicht auch in deutscher Sprache schreiben lassen sollte
Hmmm, ich habe natürlich nicht gleich im ersten Satz geschrieben, dass dies Ausserirdischen sind, aber dies war auch nicht als der eigentliche Clou gemeint. Nehmen wir diese "Enthüllung" einfach mal als ein kleiner Bonus - es kann sofort einleuchten (wie bei dir, Tichy) oder als zusätzliche Überraschung wirken.ich bereits nach den ersten Zeilen "gerochen" habe, dass hier Ausserirdische ein irdisches Produkt untersuchen und nicht umgekehrt
Ich habe die Sache für mich inzwischen das "Geburtskanal-Problem" getauft.Die Missverständnisse in ihren Interpretationsversuchen sind amüsant zu lesen. Ich finde allerdings, dass man da noch mehr herausholen könnte. Insbesondere verstehe ich nicht ganz, warum die beiden sofort wissen, wo sich bei dem Weibchen der Geburtskanal befinden muss -- und daraus auch noch direkt auf die von Dir intendierte sexuelle Verklemmung schließen. Da würde ich noch ein paar logische Zwischenschritte einbauen. Übrigens: Schau Dir mal eine unbekleidete Frau in dieser Position an, falls gerade zur Hand -- vom Geburtskanal ist da nämlich tatsächlich nicht so viel zu sehen
Als ich diese berühmte Zeichnung vor vielen Jahren zum ersten Mal sah, fielen mir zwei Sachen ein:
1) Diese gehobene Hand könnte von Ausserirdischen als Drohung empfunden werden
2) Vielleicht ist eine Figur als Mann erkennbar, doch wie sollten Ausserirdischen die andere Figur als Frau erkennen, wo man ja gar keine Spalte sieht. Nach dem Motto: Hätte man dies nicht etwas deutlicher zeichnen können?
Die Jahre vergingen ... und heutzutage kenne ich die Entstehungsgeschichten dieser Platte.
Eine Anekdote ist, dass diese Zeichnung in den (amerikanischen) Zeitungen als Skandal aufgefasst wurde: Wie konnte man bloss diesen Schmutz in den Weltraum schicken?
Ich jedenfalls blieb bei meinen ursprünglichen Gedanken und dachte mir eine Geschichte (die obenstehende) aus, in welcher ich mich wunderte, wie die ausserirdischen Finder auf die Platte reagieren würden.
So. Das Geburtskanal-Problem ist nun, dass ich zwar die Zeichnung als verwirrend für Aliens ansehe, meine Leser aber die Zeichnung anders interpretieren können. Hier liegt eine stilistische Schwäche vor, ich muss deutlicher machen, dass meine Aliens jene Verständnisprobleme haben, wie ich sie für angemessen halte. Wenn ich die Geschichte später mal umschreibe, muss ich da den Hebel ansetzen.
