[font="'times new roman', serif;"]"Islandia" und "The Uninvited" bzw. deren Autoren waren mir zuvor nicht bekannt. Wiki spuckt dazu aus, dass Islandia das (einzige phantastische) Lebenswerk von Wright war, einem Professor für Recht, Spezialgebiet Gesellschafts- und Wirtschaftsrecht sowie Seerecht, der an diversen Unis lehrte. Er hat seit seiner Jugend immer wieder an dieser Utopie eines fiktiven Landes gearbeitet und sie in Hinblick auf Geschichte, Kultur und Geographie ähnlich detailliert entworfen wie Tolkien seine Mittelerde. Er konnte seine Arbeit nicht fertig stellen, weil er 1931 bei einem Autounfall starb. Seine Witwe und nach deren Tod 1937 seine Tochter vollendeten das Werk anhand seiner Aufzeichnungen. Die Aufzeichnungen mit Anhängen sollen über 2300 Seiten lang sein, nach der Bearbeitung blieb immer noch ein Wälzer von 1000+ Seiten.[/font]
[font="'times new roman', serif;"]Dorothy Macardle war eine der schillernden, aber auch umstrittenen Figuren im irischen Freiheitskampf zu Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ihr Hauptwerk war "The Irish Republic", eine aus ihrer Sicht geschilderte Historie des Unabhängigkeitskampfes der Iren. Studierte Historiker belächelten das Werk und beschimpften sie als Apologetin des umstrittenen Politikers Éamon de Valera. Macardle war entsetzt über die Festschreibung der Rolle der Frau als „Heimchen am Herd“ in der irischen Verfassung von 1937:[/font]

[font="'times new roman', serif;"]Diese Artikel stehen nach wie vor so in der Verfassung. Es soll 2018 ein Referendum geben, sie zu streichen. Uneasy Freehold, so der Originaltitel, baut genau darauf auf. Es ist eine haunted house-Geschichte. Der Geist im Geisterhaus ist der einer Frau, die dieses nicht verlassen und auch nicht wahrgenommen werden kann ...[/font]
[font="'times new roman', serif;"]Bei den Kurzgeschichten tauchen, wie mir scheint, die üblichen Verdächtigen auf, deren Namen und Geschichten die Zeit überdauert haben. Eigentlich schade, denn die Retro Hugos sind eine schöne Gelegenheit, die zu Unrecht vergessenen Geschichten anderer Autoren mal wieder ins Rampenlicht zu rücken. Von Asimov gibt es natürlich Geschichten zur Foundation und Robotern (eine schwache Robotergeschichte, wie ich finde, wenn DAS Hugowürdig ist †¦), von Leiber eine Fafhrd und Gray Mouser-Story (die auf deutsch recht schwer aufzutreiben ist), die Van Vogt Geschichte aus Silverbergs Hall of Fame Anthologie (von der bei Golkonda jetzt endlich der zweite Teil erschien), humoriges von Brown (der einzige Nachdruck von Etaoin Shrdlu scheint in einem dieser urigen Silberbände von Moewig gewesen zu sein, der Titel besteht aus den zwölf meistgenutzten Buchstaben der englischen Sprache in absteigender Reihenfolge, die andere Geschichte von Brown handelt von einer Maus, die ein deutscher Professor auf den Mond schießt, wo sie Außerirdischen in die Hände fällt, die ihre Intelligenz steigern und sie in der Maske von Mickey Maus als Spion für sie zurückschicken).[/font]
[font="'times new roman', serif;"]C.L. Moore ist als einzige Frau bei den Kurzgeschichten vertreten, mal mit Humor (The Twonky war die lose Vorlage für einen Film, an dem Kalklhofe wohl seinen Spass hätte, ein böses Fernsehgerät aus der Zukunft hypnotisiert seinen Besitzer oder so, kann man bei Youtube sehen), mal mit einer Weltuntergangsgeschichte, was im Weltkriegsjahr 1942 sicher eine Grundstimmung in der Bevölkerung aufgreift. Die Lester del Rey Geschichte ist nicht in del Reys eigener Best Of-Sammlung enthalten, da gibt es für 1942 eine andere Geschichte. Wenn also der Autor selbst seine Geschichte schon nicht für seine beste hält †¦ Obwohl man der Fairness wegen sagen muss, dass Frederic Pohl sie in seinem Vorwort ausdrücklich nennt. Vielleicht gab es da ja auch Rechteprobleme. [/font]
